I hate shopping at Wal-Mart! I cringe every time I walk into the place. I saw a documentary about the company a few years ago and that turned me off of the superstore. I heard they're apparently trying to turn things around ... maybe I need to find a newer documentary.

Even though I prefer to buy American made things from local stores, Wally World has become a necessary evil in my life. The reason I shop there is 2-fold.
1. When I get out, especially when I've got all 3 in tow, I need to get as much of what I need in the same
place because there's really no telling when I'll get out again. So ... convenience.
2. The prices. I'm a cheapskate ... not ashamed of it.

Okay, so here's where the good part comes in! My wonderful sis-in-law told me about price matching at Wal-Mart. They will match a lower price at any other local store. Woohoo! Ever since I made this discovery, I've added a step to my grocery list making process. I check pretty much every store in the local area for better deals. Takes me about an hour. But I think it's worth it!

Many times Wal-Mart really does have the lowest price. But I'm usually able to save at least $25 this way. It's worth it to me since I go through at least 2 gallons of milk and 3 pints of strawberries a week.

So I've decided to share the love! After my weekly grocery trip, I'm going to post things I've bought that I price matched so everyone can benefit from my research. A good example of the deals I find: Strawberries are almost always .99 a pint at Aldi. They're usually $1.98 at Wal-Mart ... half off! YAY!

Since I'll only be posting about the deals I've found on my trip, I'll tell you how I do it in case you want to do your own legwork. :)

1. I've bookmarked every grocery store I can think of in the area: Tom Thumb, Aldi, Albertsons, Kroger, The Dollar Store, Dollar General, CVS, Walgreens, Brookshires, Target, Sprouts, & HEB (Having them bookmarked just makes the process easier)
2. Make out my grocery list.
3. Get on my computer and pull up each store's online weekly ad paper & look for the items on my list. Sometimes, if I see a really good deal I'll get something not on my list but I'm not about buying 42 travel size shampoos for only $1.29. I just want a good deal on the things I already buy.
4. When I find a better deal at a different store, I write the better price, the item info (brand, size, etc) & the store I found it at next to the item on my list.
Note: If Tom Thumb has 16oz of cheese for $4 but I can only find the same cheese at Wal-Mart in 8oz I'll
say 8oz for $2 ... get it?
Note #2: I try to stay pretty true to the exact size & brand. However, if the Tom Thumb brand cheese is
on sale I'll relate that to the Wal-Mart brand cheese. Sometimes the cashiers except it, sometimes not.
5. When I shop I'll get whatever's cheaper ... Wal-Mart or the other store. When at the register, I tell the cashier right off that I'm price matching. Then I group all my price matched items together (just makes it easier). When the cashier comes to an item I'm pricing matching I tell him "That cheese is $2 at Tom Thumb."

Although someone could very easily take advantage of the system, I don't. I stay very honest to it. Even though I'd LOVE to tell them milk is on sale for $1 somewhere. :(

Tune in later or my deal postings!
It's been an adjustment in many ways. For me, it's been hard not having my own house/space. My parents are wonderful about sharing their space but when it comes down to it everything is still my mom's kitchen, my mom's decorations, my mom's furniture, etc.

Me and mom have chatted about some areas we'd like to declutter and give a face lift. Top of the list: the pantry and laundry room. Mom was out of town for part of this week so I decided to surprise her with a laundry room redo!

It was my first real redo and I had such a good time doing it! One lesson I learned was don't cut corners. Just do things they way they should be done. It may take longer but not as long as doing something half-assed and having to go back and fix it. :o) Here's what I did and how I did it.

This is the worst before pic ever! I forgot to take a picture before I moved everything to the garage. Picture this: a table taking up the whole wall on the left, making it impossible to stand in front of the washer. You actually had to stand off to the side to load/unload it. ANNOYING! On the table was wire racks filled with extra food, lightbulbs, cleaners, Eve's backpacks and crafts. It was stacked at least 5 1/5 feet high. Bulk papergoods, trashbags and pet food spilled out from under the table. Because of that whole monstrosity, you really only had about half (if that) of this empty space to walk in. It was basically impossible for 2 people to do anything but stand in there. Get the picture?? Oh and I didn't address the homemade hanging clothes bar (you can see part of it above the cabinets). This room was once my mom's sewing room so my dad installed that for her then. Ever since we moved in, it's been home to about 100+ hangers (usually empty) and some clothes hanging up to dry. It made it even harder to access the washing machine and the items on the table.

Here's the almost completed after. I picked a color for an accent wall (I'm pretty much in love with that blue color right now!) and then I revolved everything else around that. I organized and cleaned out everything in the cabinets, sanded, primed and painted them. A tip: when buying white paint, make sure you have WHITE PAINT and not a base for them to add color to. I bought wall decals at Joann's and put them on the washer and dryer (thanks Pinterest!). I just happened to find a $20 4.5x6 rug at WalMart in the perfect color. I snatched that guy up right away! I hung a white rack to hang Eve's backpacks and lunch boxes from and the white bins house her crafts and poopoo prizes.

The finished, finished product! I took off the old cabinet hardware and added adorable lollipop looking knobs I found at Hobby Lobby in my perfect shade of blue. I wanted most of the cleaners to still be super accessible so I put them on that thin rack between the dryer and the wall.

Definitely a fun experience! It was a little intimidating at first and I learned alot along the way. Bu more importantly, I learned that I can do it! Stay tuned for the pantry redo.Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1673720664787829120.post-60783100782067389062013-01-18T12:39:00.001-08:002013-01-18T12:39:32.584-08:00Beer Broccoli Cheese Soup

I discovered greatness! I was going to make broccoli cheese soup for some friends and my husband, half jokingly, suggested I make it with beer. I've seen Cheddar beer soup recipes before so I thought, Okay, I'll give it a shot!

It turned out so delicious! Here's what I did:

4 big heads of broccoli
1 Guinness beer (some recipes I've seen say not to use stout beer when cooking but I use beer because I want to taste it. So I go with dark.)
1 block Velveta (next time I'll use cream cheese to eliminate the fake food)
1 big handful of shredded Cheddar cheese
1 cup half and half or cream or milk
1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
Salt
Paprika
Tumeric

Steam broccoli. In a separate pot melt cheese in the beer over medium heat to create a yummy cheese sauce. When the broccoli has steamed and the sauce has sauced, drain broccoli. By mixing half broccoli half cheese sauce in your blender, blend everything until creamy. At this point I put everything back into the pot to season. Just season to taste. I used salt, paprika and turmeric (because I heard The Doctors say its super good for you and should be added to everything!) I wasn't sure if I was going to add the cream and the yogurt but I ended up incorporating it after seasoning the soup. I guess you could add it to the sauce making process. Enjoy!

I got these baskets from the Dollar Store. They had them in 5 different colors. I wanted something to shove all the random stuff in the babies' closet in that I want easy access to but don't necessarily use on a daily basis.
Diapers, formula and blankets. My dad built these shelves before we moved in. At first they really annoyed me but I like them now.Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1673720664787829120.post-70422807216192301892013-01-12T07:50:00.001-08:002013-01-12T07:50:55.789-08:00More Secrets

There was a time when I was a one-kid mom running my own home. I have since evolved to a three-kid mom sharing the homemaking responsibilities. I think things are about equal ... more kids, less homemaking responsibilities. I thought I'd share some of what I do that has made keeping house MUCH easier for me.
Before we moved in with my folks and the only kid I had nipping at my heels was Eve, I used the Card File System. The what??, you ask. I got this idea from the book Sidetracked Home Executives, a book my mom read when she was a young housewife and passed on to me. It's a great system to organize your chores and appointments and everything else you want to accomplish in a day, week, month and year. I'm hoping to go back to this system once things stabilize around here.
Now I use a calendar. I made a blank one that I framed and write in the days, month and chores with a dry erase marker. My goal these days is to do ONE chore a day. For example, this week looked like this:
- Monday: Our room
- Tuesday: Bathrooms (mine and the girls')
- Wednesday: Girls' rooms
- Thursday: Laundry
- Friday: Closets
Sometimes I end up doing laundry more than once a week and "closets" isn't on there every week. It usually rotates with something like "floors" or "organize" or something like that. I'm a big list maker. I feel SUPER accomplished if I can finish my one chore a day (which I usually can) and check it off. I feel like an ober achiever if i can manage to throw another chore in too.
BUT IS THERE TIME FOR ALL OF THAT?? A very valid question, I frequently ask myself. The answer is: But of course!
Part of the hole Card File system I mentioned above is timing how long it takes you to do one chore. Not how long it takes to clean the entire bathroom but how long it takes to do each individual thing: clean the toilet, wipe down the sink, clean the shower, etc. It's AMAZING how long it really takes you to clean something! I can clean my entire bathroom in about 3 minutes ... THREE MINUTES! That includes straightening, wiping down and scrubbing the toilet, spraying down and rinsing the shower, wiping out the sink, wiping the mirror and cleaning off the floor. So if time is your issue, I encourage you to set a timer and let yourself see how it really doesn't take that long to get stuff done. I was amazed! I'm sure will be too!
What secrets do you use to gets daily chores accomplished?

Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1673720664787829120.post-10006622510413435392013-01-12T07:50:00.000-08:002013-01-12T07:50:35.238-08:00Right where I'm meant to be.

I've blogged before about how I do what I do in hopes it will give other moms some new ideas and tools.
Today I wanted to talk about why I do what I do in hopes to encourage others.
I've lived such a full life! I have been so extremely blessed to live out my dreams and have experiences I never would've thought possible. I was an Air Force journalist for 4 years. I worked as an EMT and nurse tech caring for people. I made it through nursing school with zero school debt. I've piloted an airplane, traveled the world and had countless adventures.
I'm currently living another dream ... being a mom. However, there are still unfulfilled desires in my heart. I graduated nursing school in December and had Eve in March. When I was pregnant I wasn't 100% sure if I was going to stay at home full time or work. When Eve was about 9 months old I decided to look for a job. I was offered a job as a nurse in a newborn nursery and was almost through the testing process to be a firefighter for 2 different cities. It was when I was on the brink of accepting a job outside of the home that I realized I was being offered a once in a lifetime job opportunity ... raising my baby. I realized that I would NEVER have this chance again. I would never have the chance to see my daughter's first steps, first words, first food, teach her things and watch her grow. Nursing could wait. Firefighting (a dream I'd had since I was 16) could wait. God was calling me to a different purpose.
Even now, there are days when I lose my focus and get online to scope out jobs. I have a $30,000 degree that many people would see as going to waste. I still want to be a nurse. I want to go back to school and eventually be an advance practice nurse. But that's not where God wants me to be right now. Spending my days thinking about where I could be and what else I could be doing, takes away from this job. It puts my mind on something else, somewhere God doesn't want it to go right now. I'm confident there will come a time when I will see those dreams fulfilled.
I understand the NEED for moms to work. Times are hard. But I encourage you moms who are struggling with being home with your kids to pray about where you're supposed to be. If the Lord says "With your kids" I encourage you to BE with your kids. Get off the internet, throw away the job listings and shelve those dreams that are out of season. Surround yourself with people who encourage and support you in this job because yours is a once in a lifetime job and not everyone gets the offer.

I've been meaning to organize/clean out both of the girls' closets for a while and I've finally done it!!

I wish I would have taken before pictures, but I didn't. :o( Anyway, here's what I did and how I did it.

Bins for book storage. We've got tons of books. I like to swap them out for the ones on Eve's bookshelf every now and then so I needed them to be accessible. I bought the blue bin at Target for $10. Then I found the green ones at the Dollar Store!

Dress-up clothes. I bought hooks at the Dollar Store to hang her dress-up dresses on. I wasn't sure how it'd work because before this I had them all shoved into a box and it was easy for Eve to put them away (even though I did it most of the time). Turns out she LOVES to hang them up! I've had to stick the hooks back on the wall twice, but that's what you get for $1 items. I already had the stack of 3 drawers on the left and it works perfect for dress-up accessories.

Saw this on Pinterest. Love it! I use it for both Eve and the babies' lost socks.

I decided to hang most of Eve's clothes and get bins for the rest. I already had these white ones but I saw some just like them at the Dollar Store. That's also where I got the polka dot bins. Shoes now go in the striped basket. Perfect, because it keeps Eve out of them and focused on her dress-up shoes for playing. I labeled the bins because we have 4 people in the house who could potentially dress Eve and because my step-daughter is here every now and then, I wanted to be clear where everything is.

I HAVE DISCOVERED CLOTHES ROLLING!! What a space saver! In the bins are rolled panties, balled up socks, swimwear and rolled up knit pants and shorts. For more on rolling, check back when I post pics of the babies' closet and dresser. I went crazy!!Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1673720664787829120.post-53982854087297339072013-01-10T08:15:00.004-08:002013-01-12T07:48:29.641-08:00Getting It Together!I LOVE ORGANIZING!

I LOVE THE DOLLAR STORE!!

I've been on a cleaning/organizing binge lately! It started with me declaring war on germs in an attempt to keep the flu away. That bled into organizing the girls' closets, drawers and clothes. I'll post more on all that later.

So I went to Target to get some organizing equipment and ended up with a big basket for books for $10. I was okay with the price for what I was getting. But then I came home only to discover I really needed 2 more of those baskets.

Instead of going back to Target, I headed to the Dollar Store! SCORE!!! I found everything Target had at the Dollar Store plus more. Granted it's probably not the quality I would've gotten at Target, but it worked perfectly for what I needed.

I discovered how rolling clothes and towels can save SO much room in your drawers and cabinets and look so much neater. With that in mind, I found these amazing drawer organizers! FOR A DOLLAR! They had 2 different sizes. I'll post pictures later of the organizers in use so you can see how amazing they are in action!

They had 2 different sizes - small and medium. But that leads me to believe there's a large somewhere!

This is how they looked in the package.Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1673720664787829120.post-75694004696278945492013-01-10T08:10:00.002-08:002013-01-10T08:10:18.528-08:00Kiddie Kid UpdateWell I made it though Christmas and took about 5 pictures. I'm the worst mother ever!! Long story short, my phone is my main camera and when my good phone broke I got a functioning "new" phone with a horrible camera. (Thus the low quality pictures I will be posting) But I managed to get at least 1 picture of each kid at Christmas.

So Eve will turn 3 in March! It seems like she's been 2 for a decade! I'm very excited to see what 3 holds. Justin and I have both loved the 2s. Her name means "life" and she is the life of our family that is for sure! She has been taking gymnastics since September. She is the youngest and smallest girl in her whole gym. Yet she was the first one in her class to do some pretty advanced tricks by herself! She loves it! Right now she's in a mommy and me class and I'm so reluctant to move her because I absolutely love her coach! My job during classes is help keep her focused and remind her she's supposed to listen and obey then to help coach in getting her to do the tricks. She's learning so much!

My baby big girl at gymnastics.

On the baby front, the girls are getting BIG! I've noticed just in the last few days how solid they're getting. They're SO close to crawling. But that doesn't keep them from getting around. Between scooting and army crawling they get around ... FAST! I'm loving it!! They are starting to recognize people and when Justin comes home from work they get so excited and try to get to him.

They've been growing within 1/2 an inch or 1/2 a pound of each other. It's really been fun to watch them grow. I keep thinking they'll start looking drastically different and they keep looking more alike!

They're interacting with each other. They'll hold hands and touch each other's faces. They'll put each other's hands in their own mouths and try to play with the other's clothes. The absolutely LOVE Eve and Toria! When Eve walks into the room they're fixated. Granted it's hard to be because she usually runs into a room singing and dancing. Toria sings to them and they are mesmerized. They're getting to be so interactive and fun!
What more could a girl ask for?? A VITAMIX!! This week I got one! I've wanted one of these for literally years! My mom and I finally went together and got one.

I fought with the dang thing the first morning we had it after mixing 1 cup of coffee and 1 cup of protein drink with a bunch of ice and ending up with about 20 cups of a separated liquid ice slushy mix. BAH! It didn't detour me and later that day I made a very drinkable green smoothie.

I would love feedback on this post.

Maybe I'm a little old fashion, but I want my little girls to look like little girls. I came from a very modest family. I wasn't able to wear a 2-piece bathing suit until I was 16-17 years old. My sister and I were allowed to wear tank tops but nothing that was form fitting or shorter than an inch or 2 above our knee.

I look at little girls today and so often I'm so sad by what I see - a generation of girls who don't know the meaning of the word modesty. I see little girls wearing clothes that grown women wear to look sexy, but for some reason on a child it's overlooked and excused away. I hear so many mom's say "So-and-so looks so grown up!" Well let's not dismiss the fact that you buy that little girl clothes that allows her dress like a teenager or young woman in her 20's.

I just don't understand how moms can let their 9, 10, 11, 12 year old daughters wear clothes I see on Abercrombie and Fitch advertisements. I want my little girl to stay and look innocent and wholesome for as long as possible. She'll have her whole life to dress like a woman.

This is the ad for Hollister. Are you okay with your little girl wearing clothes that represent this?

Even more, I want to instill modesty and self-value in her. I want her to understand that she's beautiful inside and out but all of her outside beauty isn't for the whole world to see.

I wasn't even close to being "in style" when I was growing up. I was a homeschooler in a homeschooler community and dressed the part. I don't want to put that on my child. However, if being stylish means letting my little girl (and by this I mean preteen) wear form fitting dresses, halter tops, off the shoulder shirts, mini skirts and daisy dukes then bring on the denim jumpers!

Maybe I'm too judgmental. But when people look at my 8 year old, I want them to see an 8 year old, not a little girl trying to look like a 16 year old. Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1673720664787829120.post-28480319035646975522012-12-09T20:42:00.002-08:002013-01-12T07:49:15.803-08:00Yours, Mine and Ours

Single me with my softball buddies about 2 years before meeting my hubby. Fortunately, these amazing peeps have become "ours."

I had a thought today. When you get married there is a merger of many things, friends included ... or not.

My thought was, What happens when he has his friends and she has her friends and she doesn't like his and he doesn't like hers? Does everyone give up their friends? Does she only hang out with hers and he only hang out with his? Do they develop "our" friends? Do they compromise and hang out with each others' friends even though they don't want to?

Justin and I had a pretty short relationship before we got married, 14 months all together. We've had a few issues with this but it hasn't seemed to create too much conflict, thank God!

What is your experience with or thoughts on this? Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1673720664787829120.post-24733389689353779312012-12-09T20:10:00.000-08:002013-01-12T07:49:29.015-08:00An Idea in the Making

Lately, I've been contemplating starting another blog (like I have all the time in the world to blog!). It would be a daily devotional blog. I'm still ironing out the thoughts and ins and outs. But I've been thinking it would be something geared toward moms, women, or wives. I'm thinking about a 365-day blog that would include some scripture and some application with, hopefully, a good deal of interaction and comments.

When there's a change in the dynamics of my life I always find there's a change in the dynamics of my relationship with the Lord. I've definitely seen that happening lately and I'm trying to be intentional about stoking the flame.

I would love to hear some feedback about this idea. Any suggestions?

Tonight JoJo took Eve to drive around and look at Christmas lights. Eve very generously invited me to tag along. We had too much fun! It made me think how much I can't wait to have 3 chatter boxes in the back seat in complete awe at such Christmas simplicity.

Ever the unknowing character, I wanted to share a few Eveisms from the drive.

"Christmas deer!!"

Me: "Eve do you know that angels have jobs? Do you know what their jobs are?"
Eve: "No."
Me: "Their job is to bring good news!"
Eve: "And to bring good food!! When the angels bring me chicken I won't be so sad."

After seeing a Santa with mechanical reindeer:
Me: "Eve where are they going?"
Eve: "To save Mrs. Claus!"

We ended the drive with a trip to some friends' house who let Eve play with her decorative bird house then gave her an orange. I'd say it was a successful adventure!Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1673720664787829120.post-80262269736246963572012-12-06T11:32:00.000-08:002013-01-12T07:51:49.617-08:00A Baking RevelationWe've got a bug going around here and instead of all the girls getting it at one time, they've decided to pass it around and be sick individually. FUN! Thus my lack of recent posts. Fortunately, I haven't gotten sick. Praise God!

I love baking! But what I don't love about baking is having a lot of sweets in the house. Last year, my resolution was to bake a pie a month but I didn't want to be responsible for the consuming of said pies. So every month I made them and gave them to a friend of mine who was eager to help me out. The holidays always awaken my baking bug. I could literally bake something every day (thank you Pinterest)!

The other day I had some bananas go brown, which I totally take as an excuse to bake. Can't waste them! So I found a recipe for banana bars. For those of you who want to try, I used brown sugar instead of white in the bar recipe and used egg nog instead of milk in the icing. I ended up with a huge pan of them, a mom who is on a juice fast, a dad who "doesn't do banana bread", a toddler who doesn't do cake and me who is trying to not gain 400 pounds this holiday season. So I sent them to work with the hubbers. This completely inspired me to start baking and sending the results with Justin. That way he'll be the popular guy on campus and I'll get to bake! Here are some other recipes I've recently tried and had success with. Enjoy!

Made this cake for Thanksgiving because my sister's new boyfriend doesn't do pie. lol SO glad I did! I quickly dubbed it Chocolate Beer Cake and I think me and Sean ate the whole thing ourselves! I didn't use the icing in this recipe. I used this white chocolate icing instead.

Lasagna! My husband said this made him like lasagna ... VICTORY! I believe I made this exactly as the recipe says but instead of using the homemade sauce I used a jar of vodka sauce from the store and a little bit of cream.
<img alt="Wanted to repin this because I made it and it was DELISH! My husband said it made him like lasagna again. However, my mother in law loves buying them dress-up holiday clothes (which Eve LOVES!). So our compromise is for her to buy the girls clothes, I take their pictures and then back to play clothes.

I've been watching (addicted to!) the Lifetime show Army Wives. I was excited for the new reality show Married to the Military to start and after watching 2 episodes I was pleasantly surprised to see the shows are pretty similar.

Most of the wives on Married to the Military talk about representing their husbands well and how their roll of Army wife and mom is so important because their husbands are fighting for our country. They're passionate about it! They watch the things they do and say as to not disrespect or dishonor their husbands.

Unfortunately, I've seen firsthand how this line of thinking isn't continuous among all military wives and I know not all civilian wives live lives disrespectful of their husbands.

I asked myself, "Why isn't this line of thinking more common among all wives?" I completely understand the special calling of putting your life on the line to protect and defend your country. But even though my husband isn't risking his life on the front lines, why should my devotion to representing him well be any different? Why is it OK for me to act unbecomingly and say things that would embarrass or disgrace my husband just because he totes a wrench or a pencil and not a grenade or an M-9? Doesn't that mean that our level of respect for our husbands and our positions as their wives is contingent on what they do for a living or their "service"?

What do you think? Do servicemembers and people who put themselves in harms way for others deserve more from their spouses? Should more respect, more honor, more understanding, more tolerance and more patience be expected of them?Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1673720664787829120.post-6186952085820045582012-11-17T10:57:00.001-08:002012-11-17T10:57:30.249-08:00My Big GirlEve had a trophy day at gymnastics today. The kids got a trophy and then they got to take their friends and family around the gym and show them their "tricks."

Eve was so excited to have Big Sissy there to see her! Even though she didn't have a clue what a trophy was or why she got one, Eve was thrilled to be the center of attention.

She is the youngest kid in the gym. At 2 1/5, she has a 3 and 4 year old in her class and keeps up with them step for step. Her Coach has been teaching her things that he usually saves for the 4 and 5 year olds. I couldn't be more proud of her!
Go through my mail with me. Today I got 3 magazines.
1. Nurses.com - "Oh yeah, I AM a nurse!"
2. JcPenney Catalog - "Humph, when do I ever shop?"
3. Parents - "I'm too busy actually being a parent to stop and read this!"

So I've been wanting to start couponing. Even though I watch the shows, I have no desire to compulsively stock pile mouth wash and tampons in my garage. I just want to save money on the stuff I'm already buying. I mean REALLY save money, not just like $.39 every week on OJ. My goal would be to cut my grocery budget in half - at least!

I'm probably over thinking the whole process and making it more complicated than it really is but any tips would be very appreciated!

http://www.ibethel.org/sermon-of-the-week?referer=email

I don't mean for this post to be political. I mean for it to be religious. Not really. :o)

I've held the belief for a while that the church should be taking care of people and not the government. In a world where this is completely counter cultural, I know this idea will probably be poo-pooed on by believers and non-believers alike. I believe the church should be the entity that clothes and feeds and cares.

My thoughts on this lately:
This theory has a huge hole in it considering so many people's bad perceptions of the church. (A whole other post!)

People these days have been ingrained with the mindset that it's okay not to work and let the government take care of you. It's okay to be lazy and not take care of your family. It's okay to not ask for help. It's okay to take handouts.

How do we come back from that? In that podcast he talks about helping the poor. What does that mean exactly? Help someone who "gets fired from their job" find another job when what they really want to do is collect unemployment? Provide someone food when they, again, don't want to work and just want government assistance?

I believe people are, for whatever reason, reluctant to receive help from the church (or anyone) but more than willing it from the government. Why? I don't believe that's the government's job. The Lord told the church to care for the poor ... not to mention each other. Is it the government's job to pay for you to not work when you hit 55 or 60 because you've "earned it?" When did the responsibility for our own lives get put on the government? If I want to quit working when I hit a certain age then I need to be financially responsible so that I am able to do that. Allow me to point out, however, that back in the day people worked until they were physically unable to work anymore.

I don't really have answers ... yet. But this has been heavy on my heart for weeks and I'm confident I'll hear from the Lord on it.Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1673720664787829120.post-83127354176100510792012-11-12T13:38:00.001-08:002013-01-12T07:53:01.188-08:00Where Honor Is Due

I spent 4 years in the Air Force. Even though my tour was life-changing, I believe my impact on my country was minimal. I was in public affairs and never deployed to a combat zone.
I offered 4 years of my life to my country ... which I would recommend for just about anyone. But I know people who have sacrificed much more and truly deserve the gratitude and honor that comes with today's holiday.
During my psych rotation in nursing school I had the privilege of working with a young vet who came back from Iraq with PTSD and was an inpatient at the VA for substance abuse - a very common scene. He was younger than I was and had suffered so much. I spent over an hour talking to him about his issues and transition. Before I left he gave me his Iraqi War Veteran cap. I wear it on VD in his honor and other days to remind me of his sacrifice.
I don't know where or how he is now but I know that the number of vets coming back from combat zones with PTSD is huge and the number of inpatient rehabs is minuscule with long waiting lists. I also know that older vets still suffer from experiences in combat. I don't care what your views on war is but the facts are that people are losing their body parts, their families, their minds and their lives for you.
Today ... and every day ... thank a vet and pray for them.

Every Christmas, as our gift to Justin's side of the family, I bake. I decided this year that I wanted to bake something that would be special to Christmas and I'd only make it at Christmastime.

After a HUGE fail at pumpkin spice cake balls, I decided fudge was the way to go. I've been making fudge with my mom since I was a little girl so I figured I could turn out some decent gift fudge. Since I view recipes as mere suggestions, I wanted to do a trial run so I decided to make a few batches for a ladies' retreat I'm going on this weekend.

My flavors, you ask! Eggnog, peppermint mocha and chocolate peanut butter.

I found this recipe when I Googled "Eggnog fudge recipes" and it worked great!! The eggnog fudge is amazing!

I decided that since it turned out so good, I would just substitute some of the ingredients to make my other 2 flavors. For the peppermint mocha, I used 3/4 c peppermint mocha coffee creamer instead of the eggnog and a bag of milk chocolate chocolate chips instead of the white chocolate. It turned out yummy! The only thing I might do different next time is add some peppermint extract.

Our friend Becky makes the best peanut butter fudge on the planet! I make alot of things that Justin labels "The Best Ever!" but nothing has beaten Becky's peanut butter fudge. I was trying to come close but dang WalMart screwed me up!! All they had was a peanut butter/chocolate chip mix. So I got that and used it instead of the white chocolate in the recipe and instead of the 1/2c butter I used 1/2c peanut butter. It turned out really good, but it's definitely a chocolate/peanut butter fudge. I'm going to have to try again for the straight peanut butter version.
Some of you may be thinking "Um excuse me? Don't you have 3 kids under 2 1/2? How does that even happen!?"

My answer is, Yup I do! And here are some of my secrets to being able to do something like cooking/baking when you have little ones:

**Move in with your amazing parents who are as dedicated to your kids as you are and support your parenting flawlessly.**

Okay, so I realize that's not a reality for everyone. But I was able to get stuff done even when I just had Eve and we lived by ourselves. Here are some of my REAL secrets:

1. Learn to do things fast! (Setting a timer for yourself helps with this. See how much you can get done in 1 minute) I naturally do everything fast but I had to learn to be precise and accurate with my speed. If you can do your tasks fast you can do what you're trying to accomplish, tend quickly to your babe and go back and forth. See #2!

2. Multitask! It's something I highly recommend for all moms. But know how and when to turn it off and on. If you're not a natural multitasker, there are some great books out there. Or chances are you have a friend who is ... call her!

3. Get used to letting your kids fuss. They WILL BE OKAY if they cry for a minute while you finish something up. Especially if they are clean and fed and all they want is your attention.

4. Your high chairs aren't just for mealtime anymore. I discovered this trick with Eve. A lot of the time she just wanted to be a part of what was going on, so I'd put her in her high chair, give her something to play with (if you're in the kitchen, plastic dishes work great!) and set her within site of the action. This way I could interact with her as well without worrying about her getting into what I was doing. Also, get your high chair out of the kitchen! This is a great trick for any room in the house.

5. When at all possible, involve them in what you're doing. Okay, this might go against #1 and definitely won't work with everything. I involve Eve (not so much the babies yet) in almost everything I'm doing. If I'm baking or cooking in the kitchen, I give her a bowl and spoon and let her do her own thing (usually it's make muffins or birthday soup). Or I sit her up on the counter and let her stir, pour, or supervise whatever I'm doing. This works best when you're not on a time crunch and you don't mind a bigger mess. This can also be applied to anything! I have her help me "fold" clothes, dust, do my makeup, sweep ... you can find a 2 year old version of just about anything!

This is probably the hardest one ...
6. Encourage and teach your kids to play independently and be patient. I understand this comes more naturally to some kids than others. I do think it's something that can be instilled in every child. With Eve, it's hit or miss. Sometimes she'll do one activity by herself for 30 minutes to an hour ... play in her room, draw, color, play outside. When she's "in the zone" I try to leave her alone :) or poke my head in and say "You're doing a wonderful job playing!!" I've also started to play a "game" with her where I set my timer for 15 seconds and we have to be really still and quiet. From the time Eve was old enough to start asking/demanding things, I started using the word "patience" with her. I know a patience song, too, that I would sing to her. Oddly enough, she would stop and listen. When she was started talking, "patience" became part of her vocabulary. Now she says "I'm doing a good job being patient." :)

Do you have any secrets?Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08608085386801684484noreply@blogger.com0
